Position: city and port in Middle Dalmatia, situated on the peninsula between Kaštela bay and Split Channel. The hill Marjan towers the west part of the peninsula, and from the east and north east the city is sheltered by mountains Kozjak and Mosor.

Population: 189.388.

General facts: The climate in Split is mediterranean: dry, hot summers and mild, wet winters. It is one of the sunniest cities in Europe, vegetation is evergreen , mediterranean and flora in the city and its surroundings is subtropical. Marjan is covered with thick forest.

 
 
 

 

Split is centre of business, administration and culture in Dalmatia. Its port is important  place for passenger and cargo transport. Split is the central point  for maritime  connections with other ports on the mainland and islands, and the the terminal railway station connecting it to the interior of the country. Regular ferry lines connect Split with islands of middle Dalmatia as well as with Ancona in Italy. Apart from nearby islands, Split has ferry lines for Pula, Venice, Dubrovnik and Greece. The Split airoport is in Resnik (Kaštela).
Besides the shipyard there are in Split the factory for processing of platic masses, cement industry, food industry etc. In Split there are also many cultural and educational institutions, and from recently the specialized UN institution for the protection of environment on Mediterranean. In Split you can find important sport organisations, football stadium, numerous swimming pools, quayside for sport boats an yachts. There are also four marinas in Split.
